A Healthy Sleep for Your Child: How Interior Design Can Help

Здоровый сон ребёнка: как помочь с помощью интерьера

As parents, our task is to balance a child's "wants" with an adult understanding of what a child truly needs to grow up healthy. One such area is healthy sleep. After all, we spend a third of our lives asleep. Let's look at how we can invest in children's sleep through interior design.

Quality bed

In my projects, I use a sofa bed made of high-quality MDF, coated with safe water-based paints. It is sturdy and durable – my clients have seen this for themselves many times.

The backrest cover is a soft fabric mattress on Velcro, which can be removed and cleaned. Very practical if children spill something. And the bed itself has a special coating: any felt-tip pens or markers wipe off with a simple damp cloth. Sometimes I wish such furniture existed during my motherhood.

And there are also colorful drawers underneath: when creating this bed, I incorporated a play function into it – the drawers connect to form a train, and various scenarios can be imagined with them. For toddlers, we have provided a removable guardrail to prevent falls, and for those who are afraid of the dark, there is an option with an integrated lamp and an additional drawer where the child can put away things or bedding themselves – and learn independence.

Montessori bed

For the little ones, a Montessori bed is great: it teaches freedom of movement, as the child can crawl wherever they want at any time. In a regular crib, this is not possible – the baby waits for adults to come to them. Thanks to such an environment, the child grows more independent and proactive, learning to follow their impulses. This is the principle of Montessori.

Nightlight with soft light

Many say it's best to sleep in complete darkness – and that's true. But if a child is scared, if they are afraid of "monsters under the bed" or think toys come alive at night, it's better to leave a soft light on for the peace of their nervous system. Then sleep will be sound. Instead of a regular nightlight, you can use a salt lamp: it scares away "monsters" with its warm light, and at the same time ionizes the air, creating a healthy microclimate. I really like these lamps for their atmosphere.

Humidifier

An investment not only for sleep – especially important during the heating season. Maintains optimal humidity, improves sleep quality, helps the respiratory system and skin. In my opinion, it's an underestimated item, and I rarely see it. You could also consider an air purifier.

Weighted blanket

An interesting discovery: due to its weight, such a blanket helps to relax and fall asleep faster. It is often recommended for children with increased sensory sensitivity. Important: it should be used from 4 years old, the blanket's weight should be about 10% of the child's weight, no more. And make sure the child is comfortable: individual characteristics are possible, such a blanket may not be suitable for everyone.

Orthopedic mattress

Provides proper spinal support during sleep, promotes posture formation, and the child gets better rest. A good investment in health.

Has anyone used a weighted blanket or an orthopedic mattress for children?
