How to set up a study corner so your child can concentrate

Как обустроить учебный уголок, чтобы ребёнок мог сосредоточиться

One of the "star tasks" for modern children is to focus on one specific activity. Many children's attention easily wanders, and they find it difficult not to be distracted by extraneous things.

The main thing is to create a space where nothing unnecessary will distract an antsy child from homework or other learning activities. Here's how to properly equip a study corner for good concentration.

1. No gadgets. There should be nothing distracting in this place. If the computer cannot be removed from the desk, be sure to turn it off during lessons. And if the task needs to be done on the computer, make sure the child does not have access to games, programs, and websites unrelated to studies: for this, there are parental control programs. Business before pleasure.

2. Quality lighting. The light should be neither too harsh nor too dim. Optimal is about 15 W per 1 m² of the room. For an incandescent desk lamp, 60 W is sufficient; 80–100 W would be a bit too much – the child's eyes would start to get tired. And I strongly do not recommend energy-saving lamps for the desk: they have an imperceptible flicker that greatly fatigues the eyes and brain, and the child quickly gets tired.

3. Only school supplies – at hand. Only study materials should be near or in the desk: books, stationery, notebooks. And all of it – literally within arm's reach. If the child goes to the other end of the room for a textbook or ruler, on the way they will easily notice something more interesting than math – and it will be difficult to concentrate again.

4. Creativity – a little further away. Clay, markers, colored cardboard are best put away a little to the side, so that the child only gets them when they are truly needed.

5. The wall in front of the desk. Drawings and posters should not be hung here – they are distracting. However, the following are excellent:

  • a planner board – with a school schedule or a list of tasks for the day and week;
  • achievement certificates – they stimulate and support the child's belief in their abilities;
  • a clock – since we are removing gadgets, the child needs to keep track of time somewhere. Moreover, it is excellent practice in time management – a skill that just begins to form in school.
