What is psychological readiness for school? No, it's not at all about being able to read and write — a child will learn that at school. Readiness is determined by other, deeper signs. Here are the main ones.
1. Sufficient level of volitional development. This is the ability to control one's behavior. It is necessary for a child to be able to engage in shared activities and accept the system of school and teacher requirements. All children have different levels of volitional development, and it continues to form during the learning process.
2. Basic knowledge about the world around them:
- about objects and their properties (snow is cold, rain is wet, sugar is sweet);
- about phenomena of living and non-living nature (it rains in autumn, snow in winter, leaves bloom in spring);
- about people and professions (what they are like and what they do);
- about what is good and what is bad — initial understanding of morality and rules of conduct.
3. Ability to systematically examine objects.
4. Orientation in space and time.
5. Thinking skills — the ability to compare objects, see similarities and differences.
6. Speech development — the ability to coherently, consistently, and understandably describe an object, picture, or event to others.
7. Personal qualities for living in a group — the ability to enter a class and maintain relationships with peers.
These are the main criteria by which a child's readiness for school is assessed. Of course, the child will also be asked if they want to go to school — but that is a big and interesting topic that we will discuss separately.
I am publishing a test for your child's readiness for school. I think you will be interested to know your child's readiness.
