We've already talked about how to teach your child to put away toys by turning cleanup into a fun game. But it's equally important to keep the nursery tidy — and you should start by sorting toys into several groups.
Favorite toys are those that the child plays with every day or almost every day. They should be easy to take out and put back, and the child (and ideally the whole family) should know exactly where they are stored.
Toys for infrequent play — dollhouses, construction sets, mini-kitchens, or whatever the child prefers to play with when friends are over. These can be put away: in a closet, drawer, or on shelves. But the child should still have access to them and know where to find them.
A few principles that help maintain order on its own:
- Avoid deep containers where toys are piled in a huge mess.
- Keep shelves shallow — so toys can be arranged in one or two rows.
- The same goes for baskets and drawers: more of them, but smaller in size, is better.
- Label closed containers with text or photos of what's inside — it makes finding things much easier.
When every item has its own clear place, it's easy for the child to both tidy up and find what they need. And order stops being a daily struggle.
