Room for a Baby 0-3 Years Old: Safety and Sensory Development

Комната для малыша от 0 до 3 лет: безопасность и сенсорика

A baby's room for ages 0 to 3 solves two main tasks: ensuring safety and supporting development through the senses. At this age, a child learns the world bodily — through touch, textures, and observation.

What is important in the interior

  • Natural materials of different textures.
  • Soft shapes, safe edges and corners.
  • Zoned lighting: overhead — for the whole room, a soft sconce with a dimmer near the crib, additional light in the play area and a floor lamp with adjustable brightness near the armchair where the mother feeds the baby.
  • Hanging mobiles and simple developmental toys at eye level.

Tip: It is important for the child to be able to observe the space while lying down — their mother, light, shadows, and toys.

Safety at this age is the foundation for both parents' peace of mind and the healthy development of the baby. Children are especially vulnerable now, actively exploring the world and putting everything "to the test." Here is a checklist of key aspects.

Furniture

  • Crib with safe rails; the distance between bars should not exceed 6 cm.
  • No sharp corners: soft pads or furniture with rounded corners.
  • Sturdy and stable furniture, secured to the wall (dressers, cabinets, shelves).
  • No small parts – buttons, beads, small handles, and easily breakable components.

Electrical

  • Outlet covers; it's better to buy outlets with built-in socket locks.
  • Wires inaccessible to the baby.
  • All electrical appliances out of reach.
  • Nightlight and lamps — with safe heating.

Toys

  • Only certified, with 0+ labeling.
  • Without opening and small parts.
  • Without a sharp smell, without sharp edges, washable.

Windows, doors, openings

  • Window and door blockers.
  • Impact-resistant pads on doorframes.
  • Finger pinch guards (door stoppers).
  • Safe handrails on stairs, if applicable.

Hygiene and chemicals

  • All household chemicals are out of reach.
  • Cosmetics and first aid kit are stored not in the nursery, but in other rooms, in closed boxes.
  • All surfaces in the nursery are washable or wipeable.

Floor coverings

  • Anti-slip coverings.
  • Warm and soft floor or rug, especially in the play area.
  • Minimize textiles on the floor for allergy sufferers.

Climate and light

  • Room temperature — 20–23 °C.
  • If the air is dry, use a humidifier.
  • Natural light, but no direct sunlight into the crib.
  • Fabric curtains or blinds — without long cords and out of the baby's reach.

Check — is everything arranged like this in your nursery?
