If a family has two boys, for example, 7 and 10 years old, it's better to put them in one room.
For same-sex children with a small age difference – up to 4-5 years – when they have a common daily routine, cohabitation is only beneficial. They learn to find compromises, share, and respect each other's territory and interests.
From my own experience, I know it's not easy at all. My two sons, with a four-year age difference, fought like young roosters. The younger one was not weak and physically strong, so fights sometimes happened until first blood. And that's normal – boys always fight for authority and their place in the sun.

Personal space for everyone
The main thing in a shared room is to allocate each child their own space: their own bed, desk, shelves, and drawers in the wardrobe. And let them learn to share the play area themselves or play together. My boys always argued hoarsely at first, and then, during play, they combined their "settled territories."
Consider the child's individuality
This is easy to do through design and decoration. This is how a mother can show how much she loves each son – not by buying everything identical, but by taking into account each one's preferences.
For example, Misha likes blue, and Sasha likes gray. This can and should be combined in the overall color scheme: Sasha's bed and bedspread are in gray shades, Misha's are in blue. Misha likes planes, Sasha likes cars: we hang planes above Misha's bed and build a car garage for Sasha.
Solve the "height" issue
Almost all boys love sleeping on the top bunk, and fierce battles are fought for this "height." The solution is simple – get both bunk beds. And use the space underneath effectively: put wardrobes or desks (with good lighting!) or designate it for games.
