When I was little, there was no children's furniture in stores at all; it simply didn't exist as a category. There were children's cribs, but only of one design, and a child's table with chairs, painted in Khokhloma style, a very beautiful set, by the way. There were desks (I had one bought second-hand) and that was it.
Everything else was adult-sized: writing desks, wardrobes, chests of drawers. Buying something worthwhile and beautiful was problematic; you had to sign up and wait in lines for months. Therefore, children's furniture was bought on occasion or passed from hand to hand: those who had outgrown it would give it to those who still needed it. Despite this, my architect grandmother loved me very much, and my nursery was very comfortable and truly felt like a child's room.
Firstly, she installed real swings in my room, and then many others, following my grandmother's example, apparently also put up swings. With this, my grandmother showed that a child needs childhood and a carefree child's world in their room.
Knowing that I loved to draw, she was the first, not IKEA, to make me a drawing roll out of old wallpaper, rope, and a stick, and hung it on the wall. This way, I could draw as much as I wanted.
I also had a bird feeder outside my window - a convenient, safe structure where food could be placed. I could watch birds for hours this way.
In my room stood an old great-grandfather's wardrobe with children's books and small drawers at the bottom for storing paints, albums, and modeling clay. No one knew what a toy storage space was, because there weren't many toys; all the soft toys easily fit on my bed.
Oh, the blessed time of scarcity! We didn't have so many toys that we needed storage for them; we invented and created them ourselves. And with my inventive grandmother, we created amazing doll furniture from cardboard boxes.
Why am I saying all this? To show that you don't need a big budget to create the best children's room in the world for a child. You just need to love and understand your child, to create their world for them. If they love to draw, give them an entire wall for drawing. If they love to travel, hang a geographical map on the wall. If they love movement and adventure, make all sorts of "climbing areas," swings, and hammocks in the room. If they love to explore the world, set up a fish tank, a terrarium with snails, flowers on the windowsill, and a bird feeder outside the window. And the notorious toy storage spaces can be made from ordinary wooden fruit crates, painted, and fitted with furniture wheels to roll under the bed. Any old bed inherited can be "brought back to life" by sewing a cheerful bedspread and pillows. If the bedside table is old, it can be painted a cheerful color, or an old, well-traveled grandfather's suitcase can be placed instead.
The walls are best made monochrome, but in different colors; for this, they can either simply be painted or wallpapered. And children's drawings are perfect for wall decoration.
This is the minimum that, with desire and imagination, can be brought to life on a small budget.
And it's very important that many things for the children's room can be created together with the child.
