What materials to avoid in a child's room

Каких материалов избегать в детской комнате

Almost every parent tries to create a cozy nest for their child and choose only the best of everything — from cribs and desks to small details. But it often turns out that familiar materials can pose risks to a child's health.

We recently discussed a chipboard shelf, and it turned out that not everyone knows which materials are best avoided in a child's room. Today we will fill this gap. Here is my "rating of anti-heroes" for a child's room.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride)

It's found virtually everywhere: in vinyl linoleum, furniture upholstery, curtains, sometimes even in toys. When heated, PVC can release phthalates and chlorine compounds. Phthalates are linked to effects on the hormonal system, while chlorine compounds can provoke allergies and respiratory irritation. It's better to choose natural coverings like cork or wood.

Laminated Chipboard (Laminboard)

Seemingly sturdy, affordable, and convenient, this material is often found in children's furniture. However, cheap boards can contain formaldehyde, which is released into the air – it's linked to allergic reactions and irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract. The best alternative is solid wood. If you do choose a board, opt for MDF or laminated chipboard with an E1 emission class (or even better, E0), as they contain significantly less formaldehyde.

Styrofoam

This lightweight material is used for insulation, soundproofing, and decoration. It can release styrene, a volatile compound that experts recommend limiting in residential areas. A good alternative for insulation is ecowool: it's warm and safe.

Solvent-based paints

We want the room to shine with all colors, but many paints, especially solvent-based ones, contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). For a child's room, it's better to choose water-based paints labeled with low VOC content.

Synthetic dyes in textiles

Bright textiles are pleasing to the eye, but cheap synthetic fabrics with aggressive dyes can contain harmful impurities that can cause irritation and allergies in sensitive children's skin. It is better to choose natural fabrics with safe dyes.

Vinyl wallpaper

Not the most necessary thing in a child's room. Yes, they are moisture-resistant, but they can release VOCs and accumulate dust over time. It is better to replace them with paper ones - just as beautiful, but safer for babies.

"So many harmful materials - what should we choose then?" you ask. We'll talk about this in the next article: we'll learn how to make a child's interior truly safe. After all, safety is one of the fundamental things in a child's room.
