How to choose an extracurricular activity for your child

Как выбрать кружок или секцию для ребёнка

I notice that many mothers are now thinking about what club or section to enroll their child in. September has come to an end, children have settled into school and homework - the time is indeed right.

At the same time, there are parents who want to add activities for children as young as 2-3 years old, and that's great: it's better to start as early as possible. Do you know that the Japanese advise starting activities with a baby as soon as they learn to walk and talk? The only question is finding a professional teacher who knows how to work with young children using special programs. If you find one, run to them as fast as you can, you won't regret it. Especially if the child doesn't attend daycare: these activities will provide them with interaction with peers and begin socialization.

For the youngest children, it's worth choosing activities for general development: music, dancing to music, swimming (especially useful for children who are often sick or easily excitable). In general, at this age, anything that fascinates the child will work. Such early activities help discover talents, and experienced teachers will point out your child's unique characteristics.

From 4-5 years old, inclinations and abilities are much easier to notice, and the choice of sections significantly expands. What to rely on when choosing:

  • Temperament and age. An energetic child who loves movement will suit sports sections - they will help release energy. A calm and focused child will benefit from activities that require patience and neatness: drawing, sculpting, construction. Consider sociability as well: a shy child is better off starting with activities in a small group, where it's easier to express themselves and make friends.
  • Abilities. If a child is already gifted in something - drawing, dancing, languages, singing - it's a clear sign to direct time and attention to that area.
  • The child's own interest. This is often more important than natural abilities. Interest is like fuel: without it, any activity is a burden, but with it, the child progresses quickly and enjoys themselves.
  • The teacher. I've learned from my own children: sometimes the person leading the activity is more important than the activity itself. There are teachers who are passionate about their work and can instill interest in a child, awaken a desire to develop, and even cultivate good character traits. If you meet such a person, pay close attention to them.

With some children, you'll have to try different directions - that's normal. This way, the child will find their activity, their teacher, and their company. Let clubs become a space for them where they learn to discover themselves.

And most importantly: when choosing a club, focus primarily on the child's interests and desires. If they love to draw, support it. If they dream of becoming a fighter, let them try martial arts. It's important to develop the hobbies that genuinely interest them.
