How to choose the right color for a child's room

Как грамотно подобрать цвет для детской комнаты

You've asked about this several times — it's time to lay it all out.

I'll start with the classic concept of Italian designers. It's used not only for children's rooms but for any other rooms as well. It's based on three colors in a specific proportion:

  • Main color — 60% of the room. Most often, this is the wall color. I recommend choosing calm shades as the base. In some cases, painting one wall in a brighter, more saturated color works perfectly.
  • Second color — 30%. This is typically the furniture color. Doors, baseboards, and other finishing materials can also be included here.
  • Third color — 10%. This includes decor and textiles: curtains, bedspreads, pillows, rugs.

This results in three main shades in the room. These proportions are merely a guideline, and you can deviate from them. Experienced decorators create interiors with many more color accents, but there's no vital necessity for it.

And to reassure parents, from my experience in architecture and design: creating a color scheme is not simple; it's an art that designers master over many years. Therefore, if you're doing the renovation yourself, give yourself time to:

  • understand what you like in the children's room;
  • understand what your child likes;
  • decide on the main colors;
  • select specific materials and furniture and mentally compose a harmonious arrangement from them before purchasing.

If solving this issue independently seems difficult, you might be interested in my method for individual color selection for children's rooms — depending on the psychological and physiological characteristics of a particular child.

This method is the result of my studies at the University of Valencia on a course in child and adolescent psychology. The main thing that distinguishes it is that the color scheme is created individually and takes into account the child's personality traits, psychotype, and characteristics — rather than being based solely on design considerations.

What is the benefit of this approach? In a correctly chosen color, the child feels comfortable — the colors provide emotional support to them, considering their needs. Anxiety, causeless tearfulness, nervous overexcitement, or, conversely, apathy and loss of energy disappear. Yes, all of this can be a consequence of a color that is unsuitable for the child.

A competent color scheme can gently correct some undesirable behavioral aspects — and this is a great help to parents. For example, if a child is very active and difficult to put to bed, the right color can help calm them down. And vice versa: for apathetic, phlegmatic children who are hard to motivate, the right color can "wake them up."

Thus, by creating a suitable color scheme once, we can:

  • calm the child;
  • motivate them to action;
  • help them concentrate;
  • improve their mood;
  • alleviate aggression and other undesirable emotional states.

And always remember the main thing: the same color affects different children differently.
