A daily routine is a very important aspect of a child's upbringing and development. A proper routine contributes to normal physical and psychological development, strengthens health, improves sleep and appetite, and gives the child a sense of grounding.
Thanks to a routine, a child learns to switch from one task to another and becomes more disciplined — in a good way. In the future, it will be much easier for them to cope with tasks at school and in any endeavors. Thinking and actions become consistent and structured, and children grow up to be more independent and better at prioritizing: there is a time for work and a time for play.
From a physiological point of view, a child adapts to certain biorhythms – all organs and systems work more harmoniously. And from a psychological perspective, a routine provides a sense of calm. The child is not anxious because they know exactly what will happen tomorrow. The routine becomes a support for them.
There are many advantages, but let's focus on these – and talk about what's more important: the tools that will help you and your child manage the daily routine.
Any visualization works great with children under 6 years old. Therefore, the routine should be depicted with pictures or photos on a poster. Some ideas:
- A circular poster, symbolizing a clock face – this will also help the child learn to tell time and orient themselves not only by electronic devices but also by a regular clock face.
- Cards with pictures – pictures turn tedious routines into a game and make the process engaging.
- A homemade poster. Ready-made posters, charts, and cards can be bought in stores and marketplaces, but if you wish, make an application together with your child. They will trust a poster they created themselves more. And it's an extra reason to be creative.
It's best to place the routine in easily accessible places, in plain sight of the child: hang it above their desk, attach it to a cork board. There are magnetic posters for the refrigerator, or you can make a daily routine chart with Velcro.
