Did you know that sensory development in children positively affects the formation of memory and speech? And not only that.
When a child first comes into this world, they perceive it primarily through physical sensations: sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste. The baby learns to distinguish mom's voice from others, to differentiate objects by color and smell, shape and texture — they love to explore everything around them.
Suffice it to say that a child only begins to recognize mom and dad among other people at 4–5 months, and to recognize themselves in a mirror at 8–16 months.
What is sensory development?
It is the development of perception and the formation of ideas about the external properties of objects: their shape, color, size, spatial position, as well as smell and taste. The main task of parents here is to help the child organize these initially chaotic perceptions.
Sensory development serves as the foundation for a child's mental abilities:
- concentration and attention
- all types of memory — visual, auditory, motor
- thinking, imagination, and logic
- speech, analysis, and synthesis
- coordination of movements
This also includes expanding vocabulary, the ability to communicate and empathize, and emotional intelligence.
And one more useful "consequence" of well-developed sensory perception. The more refined the perception — the more shades of color, smell, taste a person distinguishes — the stronger their sense of beauty, imagination, and creativity are developed. Such a child (and even an adult) notices the smallest details inaccessible to others and creates original images from them.
Perhaps we, as adults, should also "level up" in this and add more creativity and sensory sensitivity to our lives.
