Textiles in a child's room come into contact with their skin every day, so it's important to choose them carefully. Here's what to look for.
Hypoallergenic materials. These include cotton, linen, and bamboo: they don't irritate the skin, are breathable, and minimize the risk of allergies. Their only downside is that they can shrink. Modern synthetic materials that don't shrink and have properties similar to natural ones can help here. The main thing is to look for the "hypoallergenic" label on the tag.
Absence of toxic dyes. This is very important: even natural, harmless fabrics can use toxic dyes, whereas high-quality, new-generation synthetics often have safe dyes. Look for textiles with certification that confirms the absence of harmful substances – for example, the Oeko-Tex 100 standard.
Antibacterial treatment. This is an important point for a child's room: dust constantly settles, and you can't wash everything. Modern technologies allow fabrics to be treated with compounds that prevent the growth of dust mites and bacteria. This treatment is used for both curtains and carpets.
Ease of care. You'll have to wash frequently – kids will be kids. Therefore, materials should withstand regular washing at high temperatures.
And now – more details by purpose.
Pillows. Choose hypoallergenic fillers:
- natural latex;
- bamboo fiber;
- high-quality synthetic fiber (hollow fiber or microfiber).
It's best to avoid natural feathers and wool – unless they've been treated with special anti-mite and anti-bacterial compounds.

Bedspreads. Soft, pleasant-to-the-touch fabrics like cotton sateen or fleece are suitable. They don't accumulate static electricity, are safe for the skin, and are easy to wash. You can also choose hypoallergenic synthetics that wash well. There are even fabrics on which water beads up and can be easily shaken off – the material doesn't get wet.

Curtains. Choose natural fabrics – linen, cotton, bamboo. It's better to select a simple, smooth texture rather than a textured one, to prevent dust from accumulating. It's important that curtains are easy to remove and wash. For example, I really like using roller blinds in my projects: they have a smooth texture and are easy to wipe with a sponge and soapy water.

Rugs. In a child's room, a rug is often essential – children love to crawl, play, and read on the floor, and it's more comfortable and warmer on a rug. Choose:
- short pile or pileless models;
- natural materials – cotton or jute (remember how grandmothers in villages wove rugs from scraps? Such colorful rugs are very appropriate in a child's room);
- with anti-static and antibacterial coating.
However, it's best to avoid long-pile rugs and cheap synthetics that release harmful substances.

Now you know how to choose safe textiles for a child's room. May your choice bring joy to both you and your little one.
