How to make a children's area safe

Как сделать детское пространство безопасным

Today we will talk about one of the most fundamental aspects of a child's room – and indeed of the entire home space where there are children – safety. Let's break it down in order.

1. Household appliances and cables

The first task is to place all appliances so that there is not the slightest chance of dropping something, getting injured, or simply scaring the baby. Modern flat-screen TVs are light but unstable – it is better to hang them on the wall. The computer system unit should be placed on a shelf or in a desk drawer. Other equipment should also be placed so that the child is less likely to bump into it.

The risk with cables is that they are long: a child might start playing with them, wrap them around themselves, or pull appliances down. Therefore, hide wires and raise them higher. There are special fasteners to keep cables tightly attached to furniture, and conduits to hide excess length.

2. Sockets

A classic that everyone knows about, but not everyone does. The socket should be strong so that the child cannot detach it from the wall. Put covers on unused sockets, and put the key for removing them in an inaccessible place.

3. Heating appliances

Stove, iron, hair dryer, curling iron, kettle. Put small appliances higher up. For stoves with manual controls, protective caps for the knobs are sold, and touch-sensitive hobs have a child safety mode. A lock can be installed on the oven. A protective screen for the stove is very useful: it prevents the child from reaching a hot pot or kettle. If there is no such screen, cook only on the back burners.

4. Sharp corners and doors

Apply special pads – soft corners made of silicone, PVC, or rubber – to sharp corners and dangerous places. Heavy doors should have a door closer installed so they don't slam shut abruptly.

5. Windows

This is a very serious topic – accident statistics are sad, and it is especially acute in summer when windows are opened wide. A mosquito net does not help here, and sometimes creates a false sense of security. I strongly recommend replacing old windows: a child can lean on them and fall out. Install handles with locks on sashes and balcony doors, and put the key in a safe place. Even more reliable are windows with removable handles.

6. Household chemicals and medicines

Children are always trying to taste everything. Put them higher up and under lock and key.

7. Small objects

Especially dangerous are sharp objects – needles, buttons, small Lego parts, metal and magnetic parts of construction sets. If a child plays with cereals or pasta, make sure they don't stick them in their nose. It's better to play with cereals not on a carpet, but on the floor, using small bowls – then the small pieces won't get stuck in the pile. After playing, collect everything in a container.

8. Stairs

Many ready-made child barriers and partitions are available for sale, but if desired, they can also be made independently. They will also be useful at the dacha.

And, of course, the main assistant in safety matters is your attention. When you are nearby and see what the child is doing, you will prevent most risks.
